How "Ted Lasso" and "Full Metal Jacket" inspired a new 2025 habit

You know, one of the mantras that I 💯% believe in is the idea that "Movement is Life!"

(Thank you, Danny Rojas)

It's true! Physicians have known forever that a moving and mobile patient is a healthier patient. Which is why doctors are so "mean" these days, and get you up and moving when you have surgery or are in the hospital....when you'd really rather rest. 😂

That's because we've shown, in study after study, that the sooner someone gets up and moving, the more rapid and full their recovery.

FYI: The same holds true as we age: loss of mobility is associated with poor overall outcomes and increased risk for death from all causes.

So why the hikes? Because we all know that we're not going to take health advice from someone who doesn't exemplify that advice, right? And of all the lessons which my Marine Corps service taught me, the most critical was the idea of what real leadership looks like:

"Leadership is the ability to inspire by demonstrating (among other traits) enthusiasm, knowledge, and initiative by being an outstanding example of those traits."

In other words: Don't ask others to do what you cannot or will not do.

With that in mind, I decided that this year (2025), I would "Walk the Walk" by getting out of clinic every other Friday at 12 PM and hiking around Dripping Springs.

These hikes are open to both patients and members of the Dripping Springs community. There won't be any "death marches." Rather, the idea is to get moving, chat, meet interesting people, and have a good time.

And look! I even managed to get others to join me! 😂

So if you're interested in joining us, follow me on X (formerly Twitter), where I'll announce the location of the hikes/walks.

Take care!
